DETAILS OF THE HOST PROJECT

Name: Escuela Fiscal Mixta “Benito Juarez”

City: Quito

DESCRIPTION OF THE HOST PROJECT

We are a public school with 720 students between the ages of 6 and 12. We work in the

afternoons from 1:00 pm-5:50 pm. All the children in the school are from families with low

economic recourses. We teach the children math, science, art, social studies, English,

computation and sports.

DESCRIPTION OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

The project is located in the centre of Tumbaco about 40 minutes by bus from Quito.

Tumbaco, like other suburbs, is an interesting community because while it was originally an

indigenous area outside of Quito, now it has transformed into a booming suburb. While the

majority of the population is poor, there are also very expensive gated communities for the

rich. Life is very vibrant and the people all know each other.

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS

The school offers the volunteer a safe, familiar, and respectful working environment. Some

of the volunteers activities are helping the teachers in different subjects, particularly English

and Sports, and participate in the schools’ daily activities.

VOLUNTEER PROFILES

We need the volunteer to be proactive, social and creative. The volunteer needs to be able

to speak English and basic Spanish.
